Australian Aboriginal Flag
Aboriginal Flag Meaning
The Australian Aboriginal Flag was designed in 1971 by Aboriginal artist, Harold Thomas. The colours in the flag represent the sun, the aboriginal people and the Australian land."When I look carefully at what the Aboriginal flag looks like, it comes from the simplicity and power of Aboriginal art itself. Simple colour, choice of colour, and a simple design. It's powerful, and the colours are important. And it took some time to think about it -- Red ochre, the red soil -- the country of Australia is all red.
Why I chose the sun? Because it's another colour that is used commonly in Aboriginal art -- yellow ochre. But the sun is a great symbol for all people. When we look carefully at the colour black, which is an interesting one, it's more of a political inclusion, rather than a spiritual, Aboriginal concept. The black represents the pride of being black in Australia."

While the Aboriginal flag has been considered an official Australian flag since 1995, Harold Thomas owns the copyright to the Aboriginal flag. The flags image may be used for many uses, including educational uses, however its image should not be used on clothing or in any other commercial way without permission.

Race day was full of nerves and excitement. For some of us it was our first time at Ariki. The boys started first and were off at a very fast pace. The girls followed and were equally as fast and determined to do well.

Disaster Day .... BIG EARTHQUAKE!!!!
On the last Thursday of Term 2 we had a disaster day. At 11am we experienced a 6.8 ground shaking earthquake. Part of our classroom was destroyed and we had to build a shelter/hut out side in the playground in small groups, using sticks, tarpaulin, and string. We cooked lunch on the gas BBQ.... Baked Beans, spaghetti, soup, mashed spuds. We practiced lighting a small fire using a flint, and then we had afternoon tea on a hobo cooker... yum pikelets. We talked about what to do if a Tsunami was to hit Mac Bay, and listened to the radio for updates on the closed roads. Overall we thought the day was a good experience for us in case a disaster actually hit.
