Australian Aboriginal Flag

Aboriginal Flag Meaning

The Australian Aboriginal Flag was designed in 1971 by Aboriginal artist, Harold Thomas. The colours in the flag represent the sun, the aboriginal people and the Australian land.

"When I look carefully at what the Aboriginal flag looks like, it comes from the simplicity and power of Aboriginal art itself. Simple colour, choice of colour, and a simple design. It's powerful, and the colours are important. And it took some time to think about it -- Red ochre, the red soil -- the country of Australia is all red.

Why I chose the sun? Because it's another colour that is used commonly in Aboriginal art -- yellow ochre. But the sun is a great symbol for all people. When we look carefully at the colour black, which is an interesting one, it's more of a political inclusion, rather than a spiritual, Aboriginal concept. The black represents the pride of being black in Australia."

While the Aboriginal flag has been considered an official Australian flag since 1995, Harold Thomas owns the copyright to the Aboriginal flag. The flags image may be used for many uses, including educational uses, however its image should not be used on clothing or in any other commercial way without permission.

Cross Country

Cross country held on Wednesday 20th October. The course was set on the hills behind school, it was a cold but a fresh day and everyone was keen and excited to run.

Lots of smiles, nerves, sheep poo and goosebumps....made it a fun day. We can't wait for next years cross country.
